Are you an Earth Intern Too?
Consider what it could mean to be an earth intern, connecting spiritual and green concepts. Interns learn while working, keeping a beginner's mind, we're open to learning new things. We focus on learning spiritual concepts while doing our "classwork" with Nature as a learning manipulative.
"in the beginner's mind there are many possibilities, in the expert's mind there are few."
-Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki
Spirituality can be defined in a myriad of ways. A simple and all-welcoming way could be "that which gives life meaning and personal fulfillment."
Spirituality is as a living entity, like a vine, which can either be stunted or be grown. But it cannot survive by
choking others or by being choked. In this respect, we all have a simple definition of spirituality in common. And what happens when we put green-living (and/or Nature reverence) in the mix?
Well, of this we can be sure, no matter what words we use to describe our spiritual practice and its origin... What we put into our water goes downstream. This is true of natural water, and it is true in a spiritual sense. When we prevent pollution of water, we alleviate the suffering down stream. Whatever our beliefs may be, we all experience life through Nature and bless one another with the care of it!
Now we know that we have two major things in common. 1. We share something unseen, and we desire meaning and fulfillment. 2. We share and rely on each other for a measure of that fulfillment, through Nature, which mirrors spiritual concepts and can be seen and cared for - together.
Awesome! All of Nature has its mirror-significance in spiritual context. If we tend to our shared resources - together - wouldn't we contribute to each other's spiritual growth and wellness, and learn the value of our resources - as well as the value of each other?
Interns don't always know what they're doing right away. Let's face it. Sometimes, we just have to put ourselves out there, commit to the work, trust, and allow ourselves the space to learn.
I think we can do that.
